WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY?

Bowen Therapy is a soft tissue therapy that does not require adjustment or manipulation to gain results. Instead, gentle moves are made across very specific muscles, ligaments and tendons. These moves influence the fascia (connective tissue) in various parts of your body. Fascia is involved with the tension of all your muscles.

During the treatment there will be short breaks where you will be left resting to allow your body to respond to the moves that have been made. This rest period is an important part of the treatment and gives your body time to make the subtle adjustments which help to re-balance, relieve tension and reduce pain.

Sometimes physical injury, poor posture, or a stressful lifestyle can result in the muscle tension being thrown out of balance and symptoms can arise. These symptoms range from back pain, stiffness, joint pain, headaches, asthma, IBS and many others. In some cases relief from the presenting symptoms can be experienced after the first visit. Many people state that over the following 3-5 days they experience reactions as the body accepts the therapy and realigns itself. Acute conditions can respond quickly whereas chronic conditions may take several treatments.

The simplicity and effectiveness of Bowen Therapy makes it suitable for all ages including babies and the very elderly. It can also be used throughout pregnancy. At The Glasgow Bowen Clinic, we are now using Bowen Therapy on an increasing numbers of health and sports professionals to treat muscular and skeletal issues, and also to help prevent sports injury from occurring by keeping the body balanced.

WHAT CAN BOWEN THERAPY TREAT?

Bowen Therapy is always aimed at treating the whole body. Very often the cause of pain is different to where you actually feel it. As the body adjusts and re-balances, the effects can act on many of the body’s systems and not just the muscles. This is why positive results can be seen with seemingly unrelated conditions such as IBS, chronic fatigue and asthma.

Although we treat the whole body, the list below are some conditions that do respond well to the Bowen Technique. This list is in no way exhaustive. If you have a condition that is not listed, please contact us to see if Bowen Therapy is the correct therapy for you. There are many published articles and case histories on The Bowen Technique.
