The Bowen technique is a hands-on therapy that uses specific moves over muscles and soft tissue to help re-align your whole body.
These moves are designed to stimulate a natural re-balancing process and are often gentle and relaxing to receive.
The main way that Bowen differs from physiotherapy and other modalities is that a Bowen Treatment is always aimed at treating the whole body.
By bringing the whole body into balance in a safe and natural way, Bowen has been found to be effective at helping resolve both acute conditions as well as long standing chronic conditions.
This is because, in many cases, where pain is being felt is different to the root cause of that pain. For example, an old ankle injury could be causing your back pain. A fall onto your tailbone could be causing your headaches. A pelvic imbalance could be causing your sciatica or even your jaw pain. By only treating the painful area, most modalities will often only bring short term relief.
Another unique characteristic of Bowen therapy are the short breaks when the practitioner will often leave the room. This allows the process of interoception – the body’s ability to assess what is going on within itself and to respond to the input it has just received. During these breaks the body will often start to respond.
People seek out a Bowen therapist for many reasons, often when they have tried ‘everything else’, or they get fed up with taking painkillers which simply masks the symptoms.
Bowen has been shown to be effective in relieving pain either sudden onset from accident or sporting injury or a chronic long-term condition such as fibromyalgia.
Depending on the needs of the individual, we always recommend an initial 2-3 sessions, about 1 week apart. This is sometimes enough to resolve the initial problem. Many people choose to come back for regular maintenance to keep their body aligned and to prevent their pain from recurring.
This gentle, non-invasive treatment is suitable for everyone from babies to the frail elderly. It has been shown to have an extraordinary effect on a variety of ailments with back, neck and shoulder problems responding particularly well. It can also help with headache, stress, digestive problems, neurological conditions, carpal tunnel and RSI (repetitive strain injury).

When booking a Bowen Therapy treatment for the first time, it is recommended that you plan to attend at least two treatment sessions, approximately one week apart. This allows the therapist to assess your initial response to the technique and follow up the first treatment accordingly.
Most people that we treat see a positive improvement in three to four treatments at weekly intervals.

When you book your initial appointment, you will be emailed a short consultation form detailing any physical injuries, recent operations or relevant medical conditions that you may have experienced in the past. This can be completed and signed electronically.

The email will also contain a GDPR consent form and directions to our location.

Everything that is discussed within the treatment room is completely confidential and will not be discussed with anyone else. Where appropriate you will be taken through a series of simple muscle tests to determine various ranges of motion and to check for any imbalance or dysfunction.

During the session you will lie on a therapy table although some techniques will be carried out with you in a chair or standing. Most of the work can be performed through light clothing, although some techniques are easier to perform on the skin. Most clients bring a pair of shorts or leggings and a vest top / t-shirt with them for the treatment. Although each session will vary according to your needs, an initial treatment will address the whole body. As a general rule, moves will be made over the lower and mid back and legs, the upper back and shoulders before finishing with neck moves.

A feature of the work is that between sets of moves the therapist will leave the room and allow you to rest. This rest period allows your body the opportunity to begin making subtle adjustments and responses to the moves that have just been carried out. Where the client is 16 years old or less a parent must remain in the room throughout the entire treatment. It is essential that the parent remains quiet and does not speak even when the therapist has left the room.

An initial treatment can take up to 60  minutes. Follow up treatments usually take 40 - 45 minutes. Many people state that over the following 3-5 days they experience reactions as the body accepts the therapy and realigns itself. Acute conditions can respond quickly while chronic conditions may take longer.

An aftercare advice sheet will be emailed to you after your initial Bowen Therapy session. Reactions to treatment are not uncommon and can include tiredness, increase in original symptoms, stiffness, headaches, flu like symptoms and emotional releases. These are perfectly normal as your body under goes subtle changes and healing.

Water

Please ensure that you drink at least 5 glasses of still water each day. Water is essential following Bowen Therapy. After your treatment the body starts to increase blood supply to nerve endings which in turn affects the movement of lymph around the body. The effective functioning of these systems is entirely reliant on water and on average the recommendation is that everyone should drink at least two litres of water per day.

Moving

In the days immediately following Bowen Therapy, try not to sit still for more than 30 minutes at a time. A little walk around the room to have a stretch is all that is required to keep things moving.

Responses

Responses to Bowen treatment may include hot and cold flushes, headaches, emotional release, thirst, tiredness and body aches and pains. These are all positive signs that the healing process is working. These responses usually clear after a few days.

Exercise

Continue with any comfortable and gentle exercise regime that you already have, unless otherwise advised.

Medication

Do not alter any medication or diet that has been prescribed for you.

Heat/Cold

Do not use ice packs or heat pads during a course of Bowen treatment, unless otherwise advised.

Other Therapies

During your course of Bowen Therapy, it is advised that you do not have other physical therapy such as reflexology, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, massage, acupuncture etc. for seven days before your Bowen treatment, or within seven days of finishing your Bowen treatment. This is to ensure that the body is not overloaded with information or given differing therapeutic information to deal with at the same time.

The body is held under tension in the soft tissues. An imbalance anywhere in the body will have a knock-on effect and often results in pain in another area. By naturally re-balancing the tension in the body, Bowen therapy often addresses the under lying issue and even chronic pain can resolve quickly.
